6x17 - Silence Is Not Golden
This is a tough episode. I’ll tag it with “tw: abuse” (trigger warning) because it really is a tough episode. We’re talking about Full House, a happy and fun family show, but this episode is really tough and deals with a serious matter.
In school, Stephanie gets paired up with Charles and they’re supposed to write an essay on each other and what they’re good at. So Charles comes over to the Tanner’s house. They’re joking around and Charles is making some jokes about how he cheers himself up when his dad is beating him up again. Stephanie realizes what he’s saying and wants to know more because she’s worried about him. And there’s a really sad line: “I’m not gonna tell, I swear” “Swear on your mother’s life” “My mother is not alive anymore..” Oh baby :( So Charles tells Stephanie that his father abuses him and hits him. Stephanie does not know what to do - she promised him not to tell anybody but at the same time she knows that she should.
On the next day in school, Charles doesn’t show up because he “fell down the stairs”. Of course Stephanie knows what really happened. At home, Michelle is mad at her dad because he punished him for making secret phone calls to an expensive telephone hotline - and Michelle goes all “Dad is so mean” which makes Stephanie furious because she knows that they’re very lucky to have such a caring dad.
Jesse overhears their argument and Stephanie eventually tells him everything about Charles and Charles’s father. Jesse makes clear to her that they have to tell someone, they can’t just look at away. “But what’s gonna happen if we tell someone?” “Well, what’s gonna happen to Charles if we don’t?” Stephanie realizes that they have to tell, so Jesse does.
Eventually, Charles gets put into fostercare. Stephanie is like “They’re taking him away from home, they can’t do that!” but Jesse tells her that he and his father are getting help, and that’s what they really need. At dinner, Stephanie just hugs and kisses her dad (who doesn’t know about that whole situation). It’s just so touching because you know what it’s all about.
So yeah, it’s a very tough episode but I think they dealt with it in a brilliant way. However, there are also some funny scenes to “brighten up” the episode a little but overall, it’s a darker and tougher episode if you want. And Stephanie is so great in it. Just another reason why I love her character and the actress so much.
